What Are WPT Passport Dollars?

null

WPT Passport Dollars are a virtual currency that can be used to enter live and online poker tournaments. You can also use WPT Passport Dollars to cover expenses commonly associated with playing live satellites tournaments.

WPT Global Passport vs. WPT Passport Dollars

WPT Passport Dollars are the result of our ongoing commitment to giving poker players like you more value. The tournament dollar system isn’t necessarily unique. It's been around for more than a decade, and experienced poker players will know why we turned the old WPT Global Passport into tournament dollars.

The reason is diversity. All of us like to have fun and win when we play poker. However, that’s often where the similarities end. Every poker player is different. We have different poker strategies, different tells, and, importantly, different preferences.

That’s why we made some changes to the WPT Global Passport system. Previously, passports gave you access to specific WPT tournaments. For example, if you entered a WPT World Championship freeroll and played your way to a $12,400 passport, you could only use it for that event.

That was a good deal, but it didn’t suit everyone. That’s why we automatically convert passports to tournament dollars so you can spend however you like. Put simply, WPT Passport Dollars can take you anywhere in the world. It could be a WPT Championship stop in the US or a Prime event in Europe. You decide what you do with your Passport Dollars.

Where Can I Spend WPT Passport Dollars?

Anywhere you want. That’s the point of WPT Passport Dollars. The aim is to give you complete control over how and when you spend them.

Before we give you some ideas on what to spend your dollars on, here’s a quick overview of how to use them:

  • Win a WPT Global passport.
  • Wait for the passport’s value to be converted to tournament dollars.
  • Choose a WPT event you’d like to play (it can be an online or live event).
  • Contact the WPT Global Passport team and tell them the event you’d like to play.

Once you’ve put in your request, our team will take you through the registration process. They’ll also sort out transport and accommodation with our trusted partners if you decide to use your Passport Dollars for expenses.

OK, so let’s say you’ve won a passport and the dollars are in your WPT Global account. What can you spend them on? You have two options:

WPT Tournaments

null

It used to be that WPT Global Passports gave you access to specific tournaments. Under the current system, you can decide how many dollars you want to spend on buy-ins.

If you’ve got enough dollars to cover the entire buy-in, you can play WPT tournaments free of charge. If you can only cover some of the buy-in, that’s fine. You simply get to play WPT main tour and WPT Prime events for a discounted price.

Tournament Expenses

null

You can use WPT Passport Dollars to cover travel expenses. This not only reduces the cost of playing live poker tournaments, but it also means more of the money you win goes into your bankroll.

As it is with tournament buy-ins, you can use some or all of your balance to offset the cost of traveling around the world to play in WPT tournaments.

How Do I Get WPT Passport Dollars?

You win Passport Dollars by playing online poker tournaments at WPT Global. We run satellite tournaments throughout the year, so you’re never more than a few days away from winning a passport.

The biggest passport promotion of the year is when we roll out our WPT World Championship satellites. From freerolls to $5 tournaments, these satellites give you the chance to win a WPT World Championship package worth $12,400.

You can use that money to enter the $10,400 WPT World Championship main event and $2,000 worth of expenses. Alternatively, you can bank the Passport and use the dollars at a later date.

Other WPT Global Passport promotions to look out for are centered around our Prime tour. Satellites to Prime events have $1,500 prize packages available, which means the entry fees are slightly lower. This is our way of giving as many players as possible a chance to win WPT Passport Dollars.

Tips for Winning a WPT Passport

Poker is unpredictable, so we can’t give you a guaranteed blueprint for success. However, there are certain things WPT Global Ambassadors, such as Phil Ivey, do better than most.

Here are three tournament poker strategy tips you can try next time you ante up on WPT Global:

1. Budgets and Buy-ins

Bankroll management is one of the most important skills you need to master. In general, serious players have at least 100 to 150 buy-ins for the level they want to play at. For example, if you’re playing $5 MTTs, you need at least $500 in your bankroll.

Use this as a guide for choosing WPT Global satellites. You shouldn’t be entering $1,060 final-stage satellites if your bankroll is $2,000. We run plenty of low-stakes qualifiers, so don’t spend more than you can afford.

2. Pick Up Promo Packages

We run WPT Global Passport promotions throughout the year. Some of these promotions include freeroll satellites, while others have a social element. Whatever the promo’s fundamental premise, there are ways to win WPT Passport Dollars without spending any money.

3. Tight is Right, But Loose Isn’t Wrong

Conventional poker wisdom advocates a tight-aggressive strategy in the early stages of a tournament. We’re not suggesting you go against this tried-and-tested strategy. You can go a long way in tournaments by starting with a tight opening range and gradually loosing up as the blinds increase.

However, it’s also true that going against the norm can be profitable. In the context of satellites, going against the norm means playing slightly looser at opportune times. Table dynamics dictate what’s classed as an opportune time.

One of the common traits to look out for is overly tight opponents. If people are playing tight, try opening with a wider range than usual in late position. This could help you steal a few chips and, potentially, establish a reputation you can exploit later on.
